‘t Hool
Description:
The project was an initiative of the residents, Philips´s engineers of NatLab. They realised that the quality of living meant more than the individual houses and in 1961 they established a housing corporation (Woon en Wijk) to build a new neighbourhood adapted to their needs and requirements. After various architects rejected this unusual assignment, they commissioned Van den Broek and J. Bakema (Team 10) who listened carefully to their wishes. Van den Broek and J. Bakema are well known for understanding Functionalism as a form of Humanism..
Goals:
To build a whole neighbourhood adapted to the wishes and requirements of its inhabitants, making decisions and taking action about the urban development of the city and their own environment.
Beneficial Outcomes:
The design for ´T Hool resulted in 14 housing types (to sell and to rent) Among them: split level apartment with elevated street, back to back houses, terrace dwelling, bayonet split level dwelling, drive-in dwelling, courtyard dwelling and detached dwelling. Jan Stokla (architect and urbanist) described the project as "Living under, between and above the trees". J. Swagten (TUE)
