Description:

Cardboard Citizens is a theatre project and performing arts collective staged in hostels, schools as well as traditional theater venues, whose theme relates to the living conditions of homeless and displaced people. The purpose is to let the public understand the problems of these people. For this reason instead of recruiting homeless men and women, the organization has an open and ongoing process, that create dialogues and workshops to determine the nature of the performances.

Goals:

“Theatre can be a catalyst for change, growth and learning for participants and audience. We are working to further develop theatre projects in and out of hostels for a wide range of audiences, focused on the lives of homeless and displaced people. We will be supporting people in diverse ways, helping homeless people to play their part in the world, and society to understand how life is lived on the margins. Our ambition is to enable every hostel resident in London to be able to access the company’s work, as audience or participant.”

Beneficial Outcomes:

“In addition to offering opportunities for the displaced and addressing hard-hitting content pertaining to homelessness, Cardboard Citizens supports the performers through housing, education, health, employment, and personal and professional development.”
